All three are toxic to certain reptiles and all amphibians and should be removed before use of such water (misting, topping off, soaking, etc.). Ammonia is a by-product of animal waste and can build to dangerous levels if water is left untreated or unchanged. It exists as a mixture of free ammonia (NH3) and ionized ammonia (NH4+) in equilibrium. Free ammonia is uncharged and is a gas dissolved in water. It can pass unimpeded through membranes such as amphibian skin (amphibians utilize cutaneous, or through the skin, respiration).
